Spikee my 8yr old 8lbs silky terrier went to the vet on Saturday, Xrays and blood tests were said to have turned out normal. All he was given were painkillers and we're told to change his dog food ofcourse. He happened to consume cheap Shep brand dog food which happened to be on the recall list. Unfortunately, it was the first time EVER my parents have given him such cheap food just to give it a test - sadly now my little one is paying the price! He lies down alot.. seems like he has stomach pain especially after using the washroom. He tends to shiver like he's cold even thought it's not, he's usually really thirsty, whines when we try to touch him, and tries to avoid being around us when we are trying to comfort him. What's going on? What should I do now.. just wait?? The vet couldn't really give me an answer since this is recent news. I'm afraid if he gets any worse. Anyone going through this?

YOU NEED TO CONTACT THE VET AGAIN AND EXPLAIN THAT HE IS NOT BETTER BUT SOUNDS LIKE HE IS WORSE--THE FOOD ON THE RECALL LIST CAN CAUSE RENAL AND/OR KIDNEY FAILURE--I WOULDN'T WAIT--IF YOU HAVE AN EMERGENCY VET ON CALL I WOULD CONTACT HIM AND LET HIM KNOW THE SITUATION-GET SOME SOUND ADVICE AND SEE WHERE HE WANTS TO GO FROM THERE!!--IT SOUNDS LIKE HIS IS IN SOME PAIN AND I KNOW YOU WONT WANT HIM TO BE SUFFERING WHILE HIS BODY IS TRYING TO FIGHT OFF THE PROBLEM...PLEASE DO CONTACT A VET ASAP...

Don't think that feeding your dog cheap dog food is the reason that your dog may be sick, some of the best dog foods made were on the recall list. If your worried about your dog then I would take it to another vet. A lot of people that come into the store that I work at has said that their dog may have gotten sick or had an upset stomach but none that had kidney failure. Another way to help is to feed your dog dry food instead of wet food it is better for them anyway.

From what I know, the one feeding isn't as much of a concern as dogs on a steady diet of the tainted food. Price won't matter here; Iams, the be-all-and-end-all of pet nutrition, is largely affected, too.

Consult your vet again. Retesting doesn't cost as much as the initial tests. He could be reacting to the general upset in diet--switching brands suddenly can be quite disruptive to the digestive system--but under the circumstances, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, and frequent or odd smelling urination are the general symptoms by the way, but Your pet seems to be acting really odd, so I'd be concerned about poisoning, too.

What do you mean your vet cant give you and answer???? Get another vet. Any vet can test for kidney problems or even failure. My vet even called me to tell me the symptoms just in case. You poor dog is showing signs. Also look for dark stools, frequent urination, failure to eat, just not feeling it self.
You need to get the dog back to the vets or at least to another vet.
Soon!

What is the formula and brand of food your dog ate that is on the recall? How long did it eat this? If I am not mistaken no dry food is part of the recall.

Here is the affected company's website that lists all of the recalled foods. http://www.menufoods.com/recall/
