hi there, the d80 is a good camera for all photographers...it is a semi-pro dslr...but then
even if u are just a beginner...it provides a bigger learning curves and u wont not be needing to upgrade it for a long term...it is a great camera which u wont regret having.
the most impt thing is to hav the expertise to fully use and learn more about ur camera. All else its a white elephant.
if u do nt want to spend so much on the d80 there are other alternative choices out there which also provide a wide variety and flexibity like the d80. u can go for the canon 400d which is a great camera. easy to use and afforable.
most important is that u like the feel of the camera in ur hand and that if u hav the proper skills anikind of camera that u use would produce for u super images.
why nt go to the nearest camera store and feel it...or head down to www.dpreview.com for more in-depth reviews on the mani dslr

It all depends on where you are headed. I own one of these fine cameras, but then again I take my photography very seriously.
If you want to just get out there and take photos and not worry about learning a lot about photography, then the D80 is probably not justified.
If you really want to learn and perhaps even one day head down the profession road, this camera can on a large part of the journey with you.
Many people who have them use them for business!
If it fits the budget and you are serious then it is a great choice! Just don't forget you need some things to go with it:
Decent Lens
Memory Card
Decent Case
Flash Unit?
These all need to be factored into the cost.

If the price of the camera and lens and card don't scare you and you believe in massive overkill, then it's a great beginner's camera. Put it on "auto" and shoot to your heart's content.
"The price" for a good kit with a decent lens and card - specifically:
Nikon D80, 10.2 Megapixel, SLR Digital Camera with Nikon 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens and Lexar 2GB 133x Secure Digital (SD) Card is $1,250 at B&H PHoto. You can find B&H easily through Yahoo! Shopping in the camera section.
For half that money, you can have a D40 with card and lens and, if all you are looking to do is make beautiful snapshots, you'll still be the envy of your family.
Nikon D40, 6.1 Megapixel, SLR, Digital Camera Kit with Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G II ED AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Autofocus Lens and Lexar 2GB Platinum II (60x) Secure Digital (SD) Card is $583 at B&H Photo.
The D40 (or the D80) will make you seem like a professional photographer compared to all of their point and shoot cameras.
The sensor in the D40 or D80 is almot 20 times larger than what is found in probably 70-80% of P&S digital cameras and this makes a huge difference in image quality.

Best value for money. Nikon;s best consumer camera and much better than any other brand's consumer cameras. But make sure to take photo lessons that specifically cater to the D80 so you can maximize its features.
Enjoy!

Your choice of Nikon (whatever the model) is an excellent one...
someone gave you good advice or your research was accurate.
The Nikkor lenses are the best in the business for 35mm.
The difference in cost is well worth it and will show in the quality of your shots.
