I am having trouble finding a surf board at the surfing shop. Since I haven't been to the ocean since May 11, 2003, which was four years ago, can somebody suggest a good one in Santa Cruz, CA, that is good for a "starting over" enthusiast?

smaller boards are quicker and turn much easier-but much more difficult to learn on- try starting out on a semi-long board and learn how to get up and stay up-then you can size down if you want- try renting a couple of demo's at the surf shop. there are many surf shops in santa cruz-we were just there yesterday and stopped at 3 shops all on 41st ave. Most of the sales people were very helpful. Weiss surfboards @ ocean beach in SF is another great shop

I dont live anywhere near Santa Cruz, but i would start by heading down to break and seeing what brands people are riding.

Then go to a surf shop and ask what they recommend for a begginer or novice.

Something midway between a longboard and shortboard would be best - a funboard or an egg.

Aks your local shop for sure.
