Can't a tattoo exist without having meaning? Maybe it means "I love old style sailboats". For some stars mean an attraction to astrology....to others they represent a guiding light.........a point of light to lead them home. ....My dragon tattoo has special meaning to me........I quit smoking after 31 years ........ my hatchling represents my re-birth....and the new possiblities that abound. To someone else it may look like a big cartoon lizard on my arm........ Ultimately I think a tattoo has the meaning that you, the wearer, assign to it

I don't care about patterns as long as they are well done and not done for a stupid reason. True tribal tattoos (Maori or Samoan or other tribes) have symbolic significance whereas the flash tribal junk is made up to "look cool." Now if a WWII vet had the Marine corps logo or an Anchor if they were in the navy and it was faded blue ink, thats a different story because it was a different time, that tattoo has significance for them, and tattooing has come a long way now in terms of technology, technique, and inks. People who say certain tattoo styles are out are the ones who get it for the sole reason of trying to look cool or badass and don't realize the true meaning of getting a tattoo, to show true art that carries a deep significance for you.

I heard somewhere, I believe on the show "Miami Ink." that a large mutil-masted sailboat, something even resembling a "pirate ship" symbolizes one that is well-traveled. I suppose to some people it could even symbolize one that is well-traveled "emotionally" or having lead a full, exciting & diverse life! I hope this has been of some help; I'm not quite sure if I am completely accurate, but I do find the topic of tattoos & their symbolisms interesting! Best of luck!
