A hug is kind of a pat on the back that lasts about 8 seconds and a hold is more of a longer lasting thing. Its something you do when you really care about someone. A hold is some what more passionate then a hug.

A hug is generally short, like less than 10 seconds. Holding someone is the longing for that person that you just don't want to let go...so you keep holding them.

Hugging someone is holding them in a quick embrace. I would say no more than 5 or 6 seconds. Holding them is hanging onto them for a few minutes.

It depends on the situation, the people...I would say hugging isn't necessarily romantic, both people are standing on their own, and it's a squeeze. Holding is where generally a girl leans against or into a guy who supports her, with his arms around her, and it lasts longer. But different people would give different answers. Why on earth does it matter?
