If you can, out run it, play with it, do some zig zags and then kick it. Run by it a couple times and then one day bring a stick and beat it. Then run by it the next day, i'm sure he'll stay away. Personaly running away from dogs is pretty scary some times yet i enjoy it a little.

lol are we talking about a Shih Tzu?
Just run away, if you can't run away from a Shih Tzu, then I think what you are doing is called walking o.O!!!
Seriously, don't hit dogs, that isn't right. Especially a little dog like that, you could do a lot of damage than you may think. I don't think you would feel good about yourself if you were to hurt such a little dog. Shame on the owner for not training their dog properly.

STOP!!!! Seriously, when being chased by a dog, stop, turn toward it and, in your most authoritative voice, tell it NO! No matter what kind of dog it is, if you continue to run, it will continue to chase you. If the dog has had any training at all, it MAY respond to your command. And if it is going to attack you, you have a better chance of defending yourself face on, rather than letting it get you from behind. In this case, I would stop, capture the little freak, and hold it until the owner pulls their head out of their a*% and comes to retrieve it. Then, gauge your action toward the owner by their reaction to you. Personally, I would be more inclined to punish the OWNER than the animal......afterall, the animal is only as good (or bad) as it's human trainer!

Probably the same action the lion took when the Jesus freak thought he was going to 'commune' with their pack.
I don't care much for anything in this world that fails to comprehend the simple rule of gross tonnage, as in, if I'm 5-10 times bigger than you, be cool yo. Now in the case of the shisoo, it can act as dumb as it wants but once it bites, it's all over, self defense.
Now if it's a rottweiler or a german shepherd or some other big dog that could tear me up, it's my turn to be cool.
I mean, go get ignorant with an elephant sometime and see what happens.
Simple rules.

I agree with the suggestion to turn around and yell, "NO!" of course, if that doesn't work just kick the crap out of it! Now if it was a bigger dog I'd be a little more afraid. You also could look into carrying mace. It won't kill the dog but will seriously stop it in it's tracks. They sell mace that is small enough to fit in a vial and go around your neck.

Well, I'd probably end up running towards the owner. But seriously, the best thing to do would be to stop, and tell the dog "No" in a commanding voice. Unless you can outrun it, in which case, run like anything!

Drop a little shih tzu of your own. While the dog is busy checking it out you'll have jogged a few blocks away.

Do what the mailman does and carry dog treats. Next time you are "attacked" throw a treat in the opposite direction that you are running (make sure the dog notices it though). Be nice, don't throw the treat out into traffic.

It is generally dangerous to run from a wild animal unless you know you can outrun it.
They're like dictators, they need to be confronted directly, using the tallest biggest meanest stature your body can manage, growl loudly, and be the alpha dog. Kick if need be, but don't let yourself get pulled down to the ground. Baseball bats come in really handy with bigger dogs.
Back away slowly while putting on a mean show.

Kick it. Kick the living hell out of it. Punt it like it's a football and you are scoring the winning point.
Dog owners are REQUIRED to keep their dogs on a leash. If the owner let it off the leash, and the dog was trying to attack you, you have the right to prtect yourself.
