I just saw another question like this earlier tonight and it was recommended to google up "slow computer" and I found a link that really helped me a lot!!!!! I just ran thru the services files in windows and disable some of them or set them to manual (I'm not on a network of workstations and so forth....) It was found on this link I'm giving you that Windows has gotten so big over the years that it sure does take a lot of system resources just to run them all, especially when you don't need to run them all on "automatic"....
try this out....My machine is only a year old, but now it's at lightening speed like it was before...believe me, having a 2.6G processor running slower after a year isn't funny, not to mention that I've got almost 3G of memory on this thing too!....It's Window's unneccessary services that you have to work with...to get your machine to run its peak performance its made to do so....
http://www.masternewmedia.org/news/2006/04/12/slow_computer_speed_up_your.htm
This was really a great recommendation and I'm soooo happy to get my machine running like new again!
Be sure to let us know how this worked for you...It's really a solution to go by!!!! Good Luck! and be sure to FOLLOW the INSTRUCTIONS at the near bottom of the article (where it tells you how to click start and run services.msc and then go thru the long list to take care of the culprit services you DON'T need! Then you can come back and it burns now baby!!!!!
I would also suggest that after you do this to try and online PC registry clean up and make sure that all your cookies and history are cleared out too...Most registry scanners will remove unneccessary redundant files that take up space! Good Luck and BURN BABY, BURN!

Well there are many reasons why your computer slows down, the primary one would be ware and tear, best choice would be to replace parts, mostly RAM.
The other reason would be spyware / adware that accumulates over time. Best program to use would be spybot you can get that here.
www.spybot.info/
Next reason is that your running out of Ram, meaning over time while your opening and running programs they use up RAM and so your computer slows down. In which I recommend this program. RAM DEF
www.download.com/RAM-Def/3000-2086_4-10185812.html
This program will clean out your use RAM space and free it up to be used again. I usually run it 4-5 times depending on how many programs I am running, so when I am surfing the net my browsers won't lag or freeze up on me.
Also another reason is the accumulation in your registry, over time as you use programs and delete them, you leave traces in your registry and so that uses up ram as well. I haven't seen to many free registry cleaners so you will have to do some searching.
A good software that I recommend in which I used most of the time is Advance System Optimizer. With software it basically set ups your computer for optimal performance. It defrags, cleans your computer, cleans your registry and more
www.systweak.com/
Also you want to Defrag at least once a week or 1 a month to have move files and what to get more space back.
Hopefully that helps you out in speeding up your computer.

defrag, eliminate processes, virus, spy scan, delete apps, clean up desktop, mostly get a book called windows xp hacks by preston gralla. delete history, temp files, cookies.
in internet explorer set security to high then enable scripting near bottom. under tools advanced disable videos, sounds, animations. turn off everything that makes windows look pretty. no shadows, smart dithering stuff like that. if you dont have viruses adaware wont do anything. and its damn hard to clean a registry. if that bad reload windows and take out anything you dont need. no extras. empty startup. no schedule tasks. you want a fresh machine bare bones then update and keep security level high at all times, only enable exactly what you need, which usually is active scripting, java for videos, maybe macro shockwave? that ought to get you started. that book is indepth and does a good job for xp. its my other Bible. below. ware and tear? what is that? If it works it works my pc is about 8 years old and runs better now than before.

kinda had the same problem with my computer
Scan it a few times with Adaware(Best scanner for viruses), which can be found at download.com
Defrag the hard drives
And, Clean the registry
If you REALLY want to make it faster, just upgrade the RAM; this will make your computer much faster and will improve its multitasking capabilities (costs under $100)
