I,v been dying my dark brown hair for years now (going grey!!!)
I want to add some streaks to tone down the darkness. My "greyish" roots are getting worse i,m having to dye them more often now!
I want a more natural look for summer. Any advice??

My hair is naturally strawberry going grey ! LOL. So I can relate. I have been coloring my hair a nice auburn brown over the winter months with a few strategically placed foils just thru the top. Spring time, I start adding more blonde and laying off the dark color. The dark color begins to fade and the blonde streaks blend in with my natural color enough to still hide the grey.

If your natural color is dark and your regrowth is darker with grey, you could do hilights and low lights to blend it out for the summer and stop coloring the ends of yours as well.

Go to a salon and ask for a consultation. I would go for foils over the cap since you will most likely be getting both colors (providing natural color is not blonde or lighter than what you have it colored).

Provided you don't recolor, each time you highlight you won't damage your hair. When we color over our hair and then re-highlite those parts, there is still blonde hilites under the dye, and that is when you run into damage. No need to keep redoing your roots if you just add a few more hilites and/or lowlites every time the regrowth starts to show. Finding a stylist/colorist willing is key. Tell them what you want, and if you can't get it, keep asking till you find someone. Reason being, they will get more $ if you pay them to color AND hilite than to just add some hilites.

Good luck !

I have dark brunette hair too and deal with the roots constantly. Typically, what is recommended is you find a shade 1/2 between the natural color and the gray, so maybe a lighter brown. Then have your stylist throw in a bunch of highlights (say golden) if it suits your complexion. That's what works for me. It's a lot of upkeep, but really, the other option isn't too exciting! If it's any consolation I got my first gray hair at the age of 19 and so did my daughter, so it's genetic. All my uncles turned white in their 20's too. Thank goodness for good hair coloring!

Sally Beauty Supply has some good coloring lines, such as Ion Color Brilliance and Color Charm (perm and demiperm). You could learn to do your own if you are good at it. Sometimes my daughter does her own highlights with the Revlon kit. I won't do my own highlights since I'm not quite that adventurous.

I will do my own coloring by myself sometimes and then other times go to the salon. They do a much better job at blending everything, so I try to stick with the professionals.

You can check online at the Hair Boutique for info and they also have some forums there ...it's called Hair Talk. Also, Makeup Alley (online) has reviews of many hair/beauty products.

Depending on your skin tone and natural hair color, you should go for highlights when you are going grey. If you are a natural brown go for a shade that is one or two shades lighter than your hair color. Just remember that touch-ups are going to be a pain.

Yes I just did it a few weeks ago and it looks really cute if I do say so myself! Go for it! My hair is colored dark brown and I put honey blonde highlights in it!

If you get them dyed a lot I would not recommend it and your stylist should not be doing it to your hair either. If I were you to help keep a more natural look get a rinse for your hair, trust me it helps a lot and is less harmful to your hair growth and development
