Thanks everyone. The reason I asked is that so many of the most popular Christian books I see these days and the messages I hear from so many of the more visible pulpits seem to say that, "godliness is a means to financial gain."

gruz, Christians aren't saved by following every rule and regulation in scripture, but by the grace of God. We all fall short, and anyone who thinks they don't just simply hasn't met God. Yet.

Yes, it is part of the teachings. If I may, I would like to go a little further however to give my personal interpretation of those words.
We are to be content with whatever we have does not mean that we can not strive for more things. It simply means that with God in us, we do not necessarily need to have "things" to be content.
The second is to tell us that we need to pay attention to those things that we store up in heaven rather than simply living for making the big bucks or having the greatest pride in what we do etc. It is a warning that those things are only temporary whereas what we store in heaven is permanent.
The third means that if someone needs help from you you should give it the best you can. And if someone steals from you, do not demand it back because what they steal is not worth anything in the first place. (see previous explanation of treasures)
These passages do not mean that we are to allow people to steal but we are not to put a high price on what they steal. As far as giving is concerned, most Christians unfortunately do not help people as often or as much as they should.

People pay lip service to this, and when asked, talk about how they are already forgiven for not really doing it.. pretty slick deal they got set up there...

If they do, the Christians don't follow it. Because they don't, they are not following the entire Bible therefore they will go to Hell by their own beliefs.
