The 28 Buddhas are the Buddhas of various ancient ages of which Gautama Buddha was the last. There is a 29th Buddha predicted in the texts and many in the past have claimed the title. The 29th is said to be born when all of the Dharma is forgotten and he will bring a renewal of the Teaching.

There are various esoterical descriptions of these past Buddhas with lifespans reaching 2000 years.

These Buddhas and the Buddhas to come are said to be residing in one of the many heavens,"Worlds" and "Realms" above this "World" and "Realm".

We as human Beings reside in the "Sensuous World" of which there are seven favourable "Realms" one of which is this "Realm" and there are four unfavourable ones.

There are 2 other "Worlds", the Fine Material World (Rupa Loka) with 16 Realms, and the Immaterial World (Arupa Loka) with 4 Realms. Both of the these Worlds constitute the "Heavens". It is in one of these that the Buddhas reside according to tradition.

I hope that I've helped you.

Peace from a Buddhist.....
