yes. wolf's law is what it's called. doing knuckle pushups will create small fractures in your bones which will heal. over time, this makes the bones denser. it's also important to hit things...not hard at first, just as hard as you can reasonably stand....solid things like stone walls, mind you. your knuckles will get stronger.

also, forcing your wrists to balance like they would for knuckle pushups will prepare them for punching, since it most closely resembles the actual act of punching, as opposed to wrist curls (you don't curl your wrist when you punch).

work your way to doing one-arm-knuckle pushups. that will be more effective. use a folded up towel at first, and do them on your knees if you must. over time, you will be able to do full one-arm-knuckle pushups on any surface. when i started, i did them on my knees with the other arm assisting--it doesn't matter where you start, what's up to you is how far you get. but i have a feeling that once you get ''there,'' you won't care about fighting. when you go on a search, sometimes instead of finding what you're looking for, you find yourself instead.

A long while ago, I broke my wrist. When it was almost healed, I re-broke it. After that, it never healed properly and to this day I have limited range-of-motion in the wrist and a fair amount of pain.

Anyway, I'm forced to do pushups on my knuckles, because I can't bend my wrist enough to do them on my palms.

I have found that knuckle pushups definitely strengthen the bone. I can punch a hard surface with much more force than those who don't do any knuckle-strenghthening exercises. I drop down and do knuckle pushups on any surface, even rough asphalt or concrete; the toughened bones in combination with the calloused skin is markedly different from the way I used to be.

I have no idea if knuckle pushups strengthen the wrists, but it would stand to reason that they do. I certainly wouldn't think they would make the wrists any weaker.

An added benefit of knuckle pushups is that they increase your range-of-motion in the pushup exercise by several inches.

So, although I have no choice but to do them, I think they are a benefit to me. They definitely strengthen the knuckes, but I can still play guitar, violin, and mandolin perfectly fine. The pushups strengthen the bone but don't seem to have any adverse affect on my manual dexterity.

Yes, knuckle push ups will help your wrists and hands to get a bit stronger. Keeping stable will test the wrists and the keeping the fist solid while holding up their weight of the body will strengthen the hand.

You can use makuwara to build the tolerance in your knuckles. Any surface can be used but you have to not blast the surface and focus on just the striking knuckles you will use. Place those knuckles on the surface, then let your weight press on it. After a good deal of time, lightly strike it. After a very long time, put some thump on that wall to work that hand. Takes about five years to start seeing true development within the hand, wrist and knuckles using makuwara so it is not an overnight solution.

I don't think it'd make the bones stronger but it could help your wrist and all the muscles in your hands. Some people can take more punishment on their bodies than others. I'm one of those fragile people. I try to make my wrists and forearms stronger by using stress ball as well as using a barbell with 25 on each side and hang it behind your back so it's just below your buttocks and move your wrists upwards. Really works the wrists and forearms. Hope that helps.

The blogbaba disagrees with Ed201, bare knuckle push ups won't do anything for the bone content of your hand or wrist, but they will strengthen the muscle and tendons in the hands and wrists. Also you will eventually develop callus's across the knuckles if you do enough push ups on your fists. Over all it is a good exercise that will improve the durability of your hands.

Yes. Have you ever seen those people smash those massive cinder blocks? They are able to do this through applying slight trauma over a period of time, which results in an increase in bone mass due to an 'overcompensation' in healing. Denser bones can sustain increased stress. The same concept applies to doing pushups on your fists. Small trauma over a long period of time increases bone density and the ability to withstand trauma.

However, don't just start doing pushups on concrete. People don't smash cinder blocks on their first try either you know! Start small work big.

You can improve the toughness of your knuckles by using those bags filled with lead pellets. You punch them everyday. You can work out the muscles of your forearm and wrist with isolation exercises. The strength of your bones is determined in part by how strong your muscles are. Remember that your wrist is always a delicate joint no matter how strong you may be. Make sure you hit the target with your wrist aligned properly and you are unlikely to break it.

I should also mention that most of your punching power is not in how strong you are but in good delivery.

You'll definitely get callouses on your knuckles that way and it should help with muscles. The bones will only strengthen under heavy stress, so probably not so much with push-ups.

You should really get a heavy punching bag and practice on that. You'll quickly find that how you hit is really important in whether you hurt your hand or not.
