If you are commuting frequently with city driving, find a hybrid car: a Honda Civic Hybrid (cheaper) or a Toyota Prius. The price premium on these cars over non hybrid cars will pay off with tax deduction and IF you drive in the city very frequently--no question.
If you are commuting long distances on the freeway, do not get into the hybrids; they will barely outrun the economical compact cars. The new Nissan Sentra is a good choice, and a newer Toyota Corolla will be offered by next year if you can wait. The current one is one of the most economical compact cars right now, although it is getting a little old. If you are alone and do not mind a smaller car, Toyota has the Yaris on offer right now--peppy car.

The engine displacement (1.8L,2.8L.etc) basically the volume of the cylinders in an engine. The smaller the displacement, the smaller the engine. The fuel economy is usually higher for engines with a low displacement. If you want a fuel efficient car. I would go for the Bmw 1 series. They feature some of the most economical. bmws in production delivering 60.1mpg, and it has the lowest co2 emissions of any BMW. You can also look at the toyota hybrids in production, which offer an excellent fuel economy as well. You can also try the 2007 honda civic hybrid delivering around 50mpg. You should look for a car that has good fuel economy as well as reliabilty and also driving comfort.

I'm curious as to where Dark_Monkey lives, as he thinks buying a French car is unpatriotic, but buying a Spanish car (the Ford Ka) is fine.

Anyway, buy some of the many motoring magazines in your local newsagent - for your purpose, assuming you're in the UK, WhatCar? for new cars, or Parker's Guide for older cars would be best. They will list the "official" fuel consumption of every car.

Note that you won't achieve the official consumption in the real world - it is measured according to an EC procedure, performed in a laboratory - but it will allow you to see which cars are more economical, and which are less economical.

if your in America, look for a ford festiva, massive mileage cars, 40+mpgs

does anyone else hate how dodge man's opening line is always "i own a repair shop" not to diss on owners but owning a shop doesn't automatically make you worth listening to.
it sounds kind of condescending, like unless you typed in the words "i own a shop" your answer wont be as good.
