You use it like a heating pad. I'm not sure what you use as the filling. I heard rice but don't know if that will work. If you think you know please tell me. Thanks.

I have made them using rice. It works well ...just don't use the instant kind, if you are making one also remember to put some stitching down your material to make about 1 inch columns for the rice to lay in ....otherwise the rice will all fall to one end when you try to use it. (you can still use it and have it be functional without the columns ...but you have to do more
rice distribution (working it around inside the cloth with each use). You can also use those hulls that they make those (stay cool) pillows out of ...but I can't think of the name of the hulls.

I have a BED BUDDY too. I microwave less than three minutes tho. An old sock and regular minute rice will work too. just fill the sock half-three quarters full, tie a knot, stick in micro 1-2 minutes. They stay warm a long time and you don't have to worry about falling asleep on it. It is squishy so its more comfortable than a plastic heat pad. You can also put them in the freezer for hot cold therapy. http://www.esgmassage.com/the_bed_buddy.htm

Yes, I tell people about them all the time. It's a rice sock, get a tube sock, put 3cups of rice in(white/brown,instant or not), tie a knot and nuke it for about 3minutes. Remove, it's going to be really hot, get a washcloth to put between you and the sock, sit back and relax, the deep moist heat will loosen muscle spasms, and increase circulation to the area. Good luck, it feels real good!

My grandmother makes them with rice. Use basmati rice as it has a sweet scent.
