All of these are great suggestions. I have been a marathon, triathlon, and iron man participant for about 10 years. The reason for your side cramps is a build up of lactic acid. Proper breathing will increase the oxygen in your blood and muscles causing the acid to leave your muscles. To help you breathe correctly try singing along to some music that has a good beat but is not too fast. E.A. ALT rock, R & B, or classical with a solid beat. If this does not help try eating a couple of tums about 15 min. prior to your workout. This will help reduc the amount of acid your body produces. ( It is a very common thing in competitive distance running).

Do not eat anything milk based at least an hour before you workout and strech very well at least a total of 15 minutes. You may want to try yoga before you run. This will help you stretch completely and will relax your body before the run. Most of all relax your body while you are running if you are tense when you run you will have more cramps. You should keep you back straight and your head up in order to get full breathes.

I hope this helps and good luck with the running.

Eating and not waiting long enough before working out can cause side cramping. Also, not breathing right while working out can cause cramping

if you do the ab stretch it helps stretch out your stomach muscles.

lay on your stomach and arch your back and then turn to the left and right for about 10 - 15 seconds for each side.

focus on your breathing. its a lack of oxygen that makes those cramps. breathe deeply and match your breathing to your steps.
