When I comb my dog I get hair in the comb. Is this normal or does my puppy have a fault?

Maltese do not have fur...they have hair which grows continually like human hair. Just as you do not shed but you do lose hair when you brush your hair the maltese does not shed but will lose some when you brush it. They are very good dogs for those who have allergies as are several other dogs who also do not shed such as Shih Tzu. Maltese also do not leave pet dander all over the house which makes them great companion dog for those who suffer allergies.

don't worry your Maltese puppy has no fault what-so-ever in fact it is perfectly normal for dogs to shed some hair even when the breed is known not to. You see all dogs have to shed hair but some far more then others dogs with rough coats like a pug have short bristly hair which doesn't shed but long-haired dogs like border collies have long soft fur that sheds easily. A Maltese in in between and does shed hair but in a very little amount. Try brushing a bit softer and as they grow older less hair will fall out!!!

Daily combing and brushing of the long coat is important but be gentle, as the coat is very soft. Some pet owners opt to clip the hair short for easier and less time consuming grooming. The Maltese sheds little to no hair and is good for allergy sufferers.
