The nutrients from the food are absorbed by the blood and taken to all the cells for energy. All that involves several, complex reactions and processes. Whatever isn't nutrient moves from the small intestine to the large intestine.

The blood from the gut rich in absorbed nutrients will next go to the liver Via the hepatic portal vein. This is so the liver can take nutrients like blood sugars and store in the form of glycogen and also the liver will remove any nasty stuff you may have eaten. Not all the blood goes to the liver but much of it does.
