Word is a commercial program and part of MS Office and it costs about as much as Windows itself. A lot of computers used to come with it preinstalled, but most don't anymore.

Microsoft Word used to come included on a computer when you purchased it. However...that has since changed, and has been for quite some time now. Microsoft Word is indeed part of the Microsoft Office package...and the newest retail version is about $229. Obviously, I'm sure there are many illegal piracy sites out there that are trying to share such programs for download. But be advised that they do carry a stiff penalty for pirated software and that Microsoft Office products now require that the product key be verified by internet or by phone. If by phone...you have to quote the product key to the recording, which then matches it up. If it matches, it will give you another product key code to finish registration. Obviously...any website that has pirated software...is not going to buy thousands of different product keys just so people can download it for free from them. Their key codes oftentimes don't work...and you just might send out a red flag to microsoft by trying to register with a bad code that whatever website had.
If you really want a basic 'equivalent' of word...try Microsoft Works...it's much, much less expensive.
Or, you can alternately try Windows Wordpad. Start Menu--->Programs---> Accessories --->Wordpad. It's kind of set up like Microsoft Word (the older versions of Word, that is)...and doesn't have all of the new fancy features. But it does a pretty good job if you fine-tune it to how you want it to be.

You can download a trial copy of Word from Microsoft, but it's good for only 30 days. This is not a free product.
If you cannot afford it, and it aint cheap, you may want to look at OpenOffice.org. Their software suite can do everything MS Office does, in some cases better, and can open all of MS Office's files too. The best part - IT'S FREE!

You need to buy MS Office if you want Word.
Windows only comes with a simple text editor called WordPad (you can find it in the Start|Programs|Accessories menu).
If you don't have money to spend on MS Office, I suggest you try the open source equivalent called Open Office. It is free to download and can be used to edit and save in Word compatible format.

Microsoft Windows comes with wordpad. You can access it by going to start then run and typing wordpad in there - it is similar to microsoft word and will open .doc documents written in microsoft word but will not display images like word will. It is a basic text editor with a little more freedom than Notepad which is a .txt editor.
Once you have written a file in Wordpad you can save it as a .rtf (rich text format) and then later open this file with word if you like as they are convertible between the two programs.
