Tonsils collect toxin waste. They get removed when they've reached their maximum capacity to the point where they become inflamed and cause more problems and pain than their function warrants. There are other organs in the body that provide a similar function, but the tonsils are "the first line of defense". Most physicians will allow a few episodes of tonsilitis to carry on, prescribing prescriptions and antibiotics to keep the infection at bay, but if it is a continuing problem, a tonsillectomy usually ensues.

I used to have a problem with sore throats but was never diagnosed with tonsilitis, per se. At one point it became so severe that they just rotted out. Extremely painful. My doctor didn't believe they'd rotted out until after another routine exam and, guess what? My tonsils weren't there anymore. Hmmm.

I got my tonsils removed when I was 4 because I had strep throat 10 times in 1 year.

Tonsils assist the body to help fight off infection during early years of life.
