I don't get ill too often and bought for the first time ever some cough medicine from Boots - the ingredients listed are:
Glycerol, Liquid Sugar, Glucose, Sucrose.

Now is it just me or is that pretty much just a bottle of sugary water I've bought? Surely there's got to be something more in it?

How the hell can that actually be sold as Medicine? Would I not have been as well off gargling a can of Coke?

Well, yes there is a lot of sugar. This is just an attempt to make it taste better. The main ingredient is glycerol. Glycerol is used to thin the mucus and clear the throat. Hence why it is in cough medicine. It also has all kinds of other uses.
