I recently shipped a package via fedex to Canada and I had to send it with customs papers. After it got there I got hit with a brokerage fee.

Are there any fees or customs papers when shipping to Puerto Rico?

Do you guys recommend Fedex or USPS when shipping to Puerto Rico?

I am a Puerto Rican living in Japan and I do recommend the USPS. It is much cheaper than using any private company (FedEX, UPS, etc.) and you can still insure, track, confirm, etc. When mailing me things, my mom would go to the UPS store and end up paying twice or more. The USPS in Puerto Rico works just like in the mainland. You shouldn't have to fill any customs forms. The only times I've done this was for overseas or military addresses.

It all depends upon what you ship, the destination country and what the value of the package is. Canada is usually one of the more lenient countries when it comes to what is being shipped. For most other countries if the value is $20.00 or more then you need at least a commercial invoice(3 copies of it). If the value is over $2500.01 then you need additional paperwork. If you go to FedEx.com you may be able to find out about what is called an ITN # for packages over 2500.01....I work for FedEx and help to audit outgoing international packages at the station I work from. FedEx can be more costly than the USPS for shipping, but they also have a better tracking method and faster service than the USPS. Also when you go to put a description in the proper box on the airbill-- you must be specific(use layman's terms)... Don't mark samples,gift---you must tell exactly what it is or there is a good chance that customs will open it up to see for themselves exactly what is in the package that has arrived in their country.

Shipping to PR from the Mainland US is almost like the same country but not quite. When using the USPS most items will require a declaration of content but seldom customs or brokerage fees. FedEx will have similar declarations but it is up to the local customs folks whether a duty and tax will be assessed. My personal suggestion is FedEx but I am biased.

My husband is from Puerto Rico and we have never had to fill out special papers or had to worry abuot brokerage fees. I mainly use the US Postal Service and FedEx. Remember, Puerto Rico is a US Commonwealth and its citizens are US citizens.

to reiterate what others who live here have said:

PR is the United States as far as the Post Office is concerned, so its just like mailing a package from Boston to LA..

USPS will be about half the cost of FedEX/UPS, and express mail offers great on line tracking......
