Yes, dvds can work in a similar way to cds and can be more cost effective. You don't have to record movies on a dvd, you can store files. A single layer dvd will hold 4.7 GBs and a dual layer will hold 8.5 GBs of data.

I bought a USB 2.0 External DVD from Office Depo that was $89.95 minus $10 instant savings and had a $20 rebate. While this deal is over now, look around for similar deals. Of course, dvds don't work in cd players, but they do hold more.

If there was, it seems like you would have a problem transporting the data or music to other locations that could not handle the non-standard size.
