The field for the Kentucky Derby is determined by a horse's earnings in Graded Stakes races. Last year the final horse allowed entry to the field earned $109,000 in Graded Stakes. So if you want to run your horse in the Derby you need to run in (and run well enough in) Graded Stakes in order to qualify. A list of all 3yo restricted graded stakes run before the Derby can be viewed http://tcm.bloodhorse.com/derby_preps.asp

Well yea every horse that wants to enter the Kentucky Derby must go in a race before hand. There are to many to type but there are quite a bit. They must enter races before the Derby cuz other wise the horse that enter the derby might not even be fast!

derby horses all have to qualify through a series of graded stakes. If the horse is sucessful in these stakes they are able to opt into the derby for a hefty price. but they also cannot be older than i think its 2. If i remeber correctly the derby is for 2year old horses only.
