Two commandments actually. When asked what was the greatest commandment Matthew 22: 36 To love God with all your heart. and to love your neighbor as yourself.
The samatarian story told us that all people are our neighbor.
So to kill or lie or be mean to another would be a great sin against God.

The First Commandment says: I am the Lord thy God.
Thou shalt have no other Gods before me.
What does this mean ?
We should fear, love and trust in God above all things.
This Commandment tells us who God is and He is the only God. All the other Commandments also defines us, to what God expects.

the first one.

"I am the l-rd your g-d who brought you out of the land of egypt, the house of bondage"

Even though it's called a commandment, it's really a statement, and it tells us who is speaking to us before we hear the rest.
