Do you know what I mean when I say I miss you and I like it here? It’s just that I’ve made those kinds of decisions for other people before, stuck around when I needed to go, returned because they’ve wanted me to—and because I wanted to too—and it’s been bad for my soul. These days I believe that we each need to do what we need to do, even when the doing of it is hard. I don’t know if that makes sense to you or not.

Well who broke up with who? if he broke up with you then that means that he cares for you but he doesn't want to be with you anymore. And he wants to stay but need to do something for himself for once. He's been put through a lot it seems by staying with someone so they won't be hurt. He means you need to let him go, for his own good and yours.

Sounds like he's saying he doesn't want to stick around for the wrong reasons. If he wants to leave, he's going to leave because he wants to. He's not going to stay just because you want him to. At least that's what I gather...

what he means is that things aren't working and that he doesn't want to be with you any more. He just said it with alot of unnecessary words that he knew would make you think long enough for him to get away.

I think he was trying to say that although he feels love for you he knows he isn't suppose to be with you. You are holding him back from what he should be doing in his life.
