Have a look on Freecycle - there may be something interesting you can include. Their home page is www dot freecycle dot org
Freecycle is a global organisation to help keep good stuff out of landfill by offering things in our local communities for reuse for free. There are many fascinating facts regarding the amount of stuff that gets saved from landfill by it's members.

If you want to do an experiment, take a large tub and fill it half way with dirt. then put a small layer of paper, plastic, metal, food.

Fill the tub up to the surface.

Place the tub in an oven and bake it for about 4 hours at 500 degrees. you will need to watch the tub to make sure it does not ignite. Make sure there are no objects touching the sides of the tub. You need to get a tub that will take up as much room as possible in the oven, (bigger is better).

When you take the tub out of the oven, carefully dig the soil out and look to see what has happened to the paper, plastic, metal and such.

Repeat the above cycle at different temps and times.

Your analogy will be to recreate about 20 years in a landfill.

If you really want to have fun, take a diesel contaminated soil and analyze it for TPH-Diesel Range Organics (this will cost you about $100). Get the soil from a visible spill at a local truck stop.

Take the same tub and put it in the oven again for about 4 hours at 300 degrees. Take the soil out and resubmit the sample for analysis of TPH-Diesel Range Organics and compare the results.

Or, mix the soil with over the counter hydrogen peroxide (do this outside) and submit the analysis for TPH-DRO.

Compare the results.

You will be able to see how heat and wet soil do not decompose materials in landfills easily. This is how you will be able to make a case for recycling. For kicks, see if you can visit a former/historical landfill and find a newspaper that has been buried. You should be able to read after the first couple of pages.

Good Luck
