If you change your name can you get a new social security number? (For instance if someone is harrassing you and you need to start again somewhere else, eg domestic violence situation).

If you're trying to change your SS number to get a new credit report (and since you asked this question in the credit section) the answer is no. Once you've screwed up your credit, it's yours under your SS number and you don't get to just go get a new number.

I know you CAN change it in extreme cases, such as I.D. theft. There was a woman in California a year or so ago that was trying to change her SS number because it had been used so many times. It had been sold to illegals crossing the border into Texas and they were using her number to get jobs. She got a tax bill from the IRS for thousands of dollars in back taxes for a bunch of jobs she had never had in a state she had never even been to.

However, the problem with changing it was that she was going to lose 20 years of legitimate work history for the years that she was employed. That could have a big effect on your SS benefits when you retire.

A social security number can be changed, but it has to be for a good reason, like going to the witness protection program.

Hi! You are in a category that is allowed by law to change your social security number. When Clinton was courting the ladies, he signed a bill that (rightfully) allows victims of domestic violence (men included) to obtain a new social security number by having a very simple request to social security backed up by a simple verification letter and credentials..contact Social Security to get updated on what they specifically need now, since Homeland Security is probably trying to plug the hole.. Also, anyone is legally allowed to use whatever name you feel like using, provided you are not using it to defraud someone. In the US, 75% of all women murdered are killed by men who say they love them.
Good luck!

Yea, i think you can. Especially for fraud situations (and domestic violence too) . I dont even think you have to change your name to get a new one, but i think ts really hard to do. You might have to go through the sbi or the fbi. Call your local ssa (social security administration) and see whats up. Good luck and hope ur situation gets better.

Your social security number is issued to you for life.It would be
very hard to change, unless you have substantial evidence for changing it.Otherwise,I would not bank on it. It would be like
trying to clean-up a bad credit score.Anytime you deal with
government issues like these, they will give you a hard time
because there is alot of crime that is tied into social security numbers.

You must apply in person at the social security office and bring evidence documenting the harassment or abuse as well as
Your current Social Security number; proof of citizenship, age
Identity; and evidence of your legal name change if you have changed your name.
Also need original documents showing you have custody of any children and documentation proving their U.S. citizenship, ages and identities if they are getting new numbers as well.
They wont let you if you are in debt or running from creditors, you have to prove your life is in serious danger.

Yes you can change it. Call the Social Security Department to find specifics.

Yes, you can, however the requirements are stiff, you must be a victim of identity theft and be able to prove it.
So if you are thinking of cleaning up your credit and starting over by getting a new one, sorry, won't work.

No, if you change your name, your SSN stays the same. There's not a legal way to change it, unless the police give you one because you are in the witness protection program.

The only way is if the police give you permission to change it or you're in a witness protection programme
