As a tattoo artist I can say that I make a decent living, but then again I own the shop. I worked 5 jobs for 4 years to save the money to open my own shop, and not have to get a loan for any equipment or supplies. I started small and now I have a decent size shop for a small town. I apprenticed to start with, but I had already studied and done piercings for 3 years before ever deciding to go into the tattoo side. I started by drawing tats for the artist customers. My daughter went to art school, apprenticed, and is now my partner. I didn't make much money for several years, (less than minimum wage most the time). It's not the glamorous life that people tend to think. I work 6 days a week, approximately 70 to 90 hours, you have to pay self-employment taxes - 25% usually of what you make. So if you are thinking of becoming an artist - be sure that you are committed to doing it before starting an apprenticeship. Don't waste the artist time by starting and then quitting. I have had 3 apprentices quit, they thought it was going to be like on TV...all play and a little work, and big money...Not so. You have to truely love it. And just because a person can draw, doesn't mean they can tattoo. Realize that most apprentices pay for their apprenticeship and equipment, and supplies. It's like going to college in a way. You pay for an education, and there is no paycheck until you are done. Sometimes it takes years, so plan on supporting yourself in another manner while apprenticing.

well it all varies. the tattoo shop in my town doesnt charge by the hour they charge by the size of the tattoo. the bigger the tat, of course the more theyre going to charge. and it also all depends on the area the shop is in, the money they make are the people that walk in through the door on a daily basis. and it also depends on the owners agreement with theyre employees, sometimes the artist only gets half of ther profit bc the other half goes to the owner. it really just all depends on the area and if there is any potential business.

Shops usually charge about $100 per hour If it's not the shop owner , the artist splits 50-50 or 60-40 with the owner

Well, it depends on the artist, where they work and what sort of business they have.

There are talented artists who make next to nothing and there are sh*t artists who make a fortune on ripping people off and shop jumping. It really depends on what they have to pay to a shop owner (if they aren't the owner) and what goes into supplies and bills. Tips are usually pocketed and not shared with anyone, but the leftover money could be split with other workers or might just be all theirs. Again, it depends on who they work for and how they run their business.

18 is many times the earliest age you could start an apprenticeship. in maximum situations, sure, you will acquire a expert artist certification upon of completion of an apprenticeship. I furnish my apprentices with a notarized certificates to furnish as evidence of instructing would desire to they attempt to open their very very own save. do no longer assume to make lots for the time of your first few years. greater pay comes after greater skills and greater skills comes after greater practice. maximum artists are inked up. This shows their contribution to the marketplace that they love. I, in my view, have my proportion of tattoos, yet does no longer evaluate myself to be inked up. It hasn't harm my shopper base nevertheless.
