Immediate ice on the lump will help with the swelling, but you should always be concerned with possible closed head injury if the child has hit her head harder than an average "bump on the noggin". Check for neurological symptoms (nystagmus, pupils unreactive or sluggish to react to light, lethargy, confusion, slurred speech, apparent weakness, balance or gait issues). If anything seems remotely out of the norm you should definately contact your pediatrician/urgent care for further advice. If a serious injury has occured, finding a problem quickly can make the difference between a bad scare and death.

Get it scanned. I had a car accident where I ended up knocking my head hard, thought nothing of it, just concussion. Now seven years later, I have problems walking, there's a lump growing on my skull (and not only outward). Also epileptic.
You can never be too safe with a head injury, just shaking your head too hard can cause epilepsy. Took three years to show any signs at all, then got misdiagnosed four times.

You have to be really careful with head bumps because your child may have suffered a slight concussion. Your best bet is to call the doctor to see what he/she recommends...an emergency visit or something else. Good luck...
