Australian Cattle Dogs (aka Heelers, ACDs) are GREAT dogs, need lots of exercise, WONDERFUL temperment, and get along good with other dogs, and small animals if introduced to them as a puppy. I bred ACDs for over 15 years and I will always have at least one in my life. They are a "medium" sized breed, weighing between 35-50 lbs and their height is usually between 17-20 ins. They can go through a "terrible twos" when they are young if they become bored, have not had enough exercise, ext. But this can be fixed easily if they have plenty of chew toys and if they get plenty of exercise. Border Collies are also great dogs, as well as Labs, Golden Rets, Staffordshire Bull Terriers (GREAT WITH KIDS!!!), Australian Shepherds, and Pit Bulls. If this will be your first dog I do NOT recommend getting a Staffordshire Bull Terrier or a Pit Bull, ONLY because they require training by an experienced owner. I have two Pits of my own, and they are wonderful dogs, but I have also been working with dogs for over 17 years. If this is your first dog an ACD, Lab or Australian Shepherd might be the dog for you because they are great minded, need exercise, and are probably the right size that you mom would like. You can check out some of the sites below, but you also need to do your own research and find a reputable breeder. Good luck!

Check out your local humane society or spca, they're sure to have a medium size dog who will LOVE to become your running partner. They usually come with all vaccinations and spayed/neutered. With a mix breed you can get the best of two breeds, rolled into one...and you'll be saving a life.
My sister has a Boxer and he is an absolute doll. Quiet, medium-large in size, obedient (with classes) and a power house. He's got the energy to run but knows when it's time to relax. He thinks he's a lap dog and hardly anyone argues ;-)

My personal opinion is golden retrievers, but they can get really big and they have a lot of hair. But they are great dogs with a good temperment, and super smart!! But they are pretty pricy.
If you want a dog for cheap and in good health, I would go to a rescue.

If you want a medium dog that isn't a lot of money and is fairly cute and very active and jumpy and skippy and all those good things they I would look for a Jack Russel. They are really energetic and normaly don't cost a whole lot but are really cute and don't shed a lot either so thats a plus and are wonderfully tempered with babies and kids and older people. If you want one go to puppyfind.com or look in your local paper.

PLEASE do a lot of research before running out and getting a border collie. They are very high energy dogs who need a lot of attention including exercise as well as something to keep their mind engaged.
Your local animal shelter is a good place to start but may include some vet bills right away. The SPCA is great because they vet the dogs before they adopt them out.

You could get a miniature poodle. They LOVE to cuddle. All you have to do is keep them nicely groomed. They have good temperments, they always want to be with you, and they will make your heart melt. I don't think they are that expensive though.

Please check out the shelters. There are some wonderful dogs there that have been discarded like old junk. The shelter usually checks them over and worms them and gives vaccinations. There dogs need love and they will be ever so grateful.

My advice is to go to a shelter. There will be many dogs to see, and the attendants can tell you the dogs' personalities and activity level.
