I carry a Charles Daily 1911A1 (3 1/2" barrel) in .45. Its on the lower end of the scale price wise and I can shoot rings around a buddy of mine with a Kimber 1911 in 5". Sometimes its the mechanic, not the tool....
Reason I went with mine was simply because it just felt natural in my hand, the fact that it was less than I had planned to pay (I think it was in the $450-$500 range) just made it all the better.
As a first .45, I'd seriously consider the Springfield XD, I have the XD 9 Tactical and absolutely love it, probably go for the .45 next. If you're more into the 1911's head for a gun show and handle a few in your price range.
Again, my philosophy is buy what you can both afford and what feels natural, then practice until it works for you. My advantage is that I'm a "natural" shooter (or so said my coach as a kid) and spent more time on the range than I care to admit.

Colt makes the most well known. Springfield and Kimber also make good 1911 style pistols. A base model 1911 will run you at least $500 or more. If you go with a Kimber or Colt the price is even more.

Kimber and Dan Wesson would be two companies making accurate 1911 pistols that fall below the $1,000 range. Yhey are my limit for spending money on 1911 pistols. They are accurate right out of the box and do not need custom work. Springfield Armory 1911s (at least the two most common-GI and milspec-plus) need some work.

The new Colt's are good, but the old ones are not very accurate, great but not accurate. Kimber is an exceptional company but you will pay out the nose for it. I know two friends who have Springfield Armory 1911's. I intend to get a Springfield Armory when I get my 1911. You may have to do a little customization for accuracy but all of these companies offer that in their guns and are very respected.

Kimber has come out with a real nice one. But for 45 acp. I prefer the Springfield Armory Xtreme Duty with polymer frame. It's also reasonably priced about 550 to 600 dollars.

Better question might be, who doesn't make a 1911.
Under $600: Taurus, Hi Standard, Auto Ordinance.
Under $1000: Smith & Wesson, Colt, Kimber
Over $1000: Les Baer, Wilson, STI
And that's the real short list. . .

Most any of them are good. Go for the great ones: Kimber, Taurus, or Auto Ordinance. Get a Glock if you are not after the traditional lines of the .45 ACP. I know I'm gonna get my knuckles whacked for not saying Colt, but for the money, I think the others I listed are better.

There is only one if you require an accurate and reliable 1911.
Les Baer
At 75yds they have either a 3-inch or 1 1/2-inch group guarantee, depending on the model/grade you select. They are a little pricey, but its one of the best you can buy.

Taurus makes a utilitarian model that American Rifleman reviewed to be one of the best available... and also probably the cheapest in the $600 area. I plan on that being my first 1911...
Kimber, Para-Ordnance, Ed Brown, jeez... lemme think...
Jim Clark (sorta custom)
Auto-Ordnance
Charles Daly (not sure about quality, probably quite good)
Colt (duh)
Entreprise (not enterprise) Arms (no idea if theyre good)
FireStorm Pistols (again, no quality assumption made here)
Israel Arms/Firearms International (quality?)
Llama (GOOD pistols)
Safari Arms Pistols
(I think Smith & Wesson makes some... gotta verify that yourself, memory doesnt serve right now but I think I've handled one)
Springfield
...and I'm sure there's a bunch more, not to mention every freaking custom pistol maker out there.
