well this depends obviously on where you go to school
it obviously depends on what text book the teacher uses.
Why not call the local university and see how much a credit hour will cost there.
If you are already going to school it might be free as some schools just charge a flat rate for everything over full time.
so if 12 credit hours was a full time load then the price would not increase if you took 15 or 18 hours
I think $50, is an extremely low estimate.
Books for some of my classes USED cost more than that. If you find a course that only charges $50.00 I would be sure that it was an accredited school.
Also if you are interested in getting an edge or learning at your own pace, why not check out the library...berlitz has excellent courses on tape and cd that will help you to learn a different language

The cost of education, ANY kind of education, can be anywhere from absolute zero to whatever you're willing to pay. For instance, you can probably get started by going to the public library and signing up for language seminars (depending on where you are) or signing out a foreign language book/movie/audio tape. Since the key to learning any new language is continuous exposure, it would be ideal for you to find someone to speak it with. Perhaps you may even want to visit the country which speaks this language.
But of course, there are all sorts of tutoring programs and classes out there. Berlitz http://www.berlitz.com is one well-known example, but you'll want to Google it (i.e. input term "spanish classes") for more variety. Pricing is pretty arbitrary, so it's best if you scout out a number of sources/websites.
Do you have a particular language in mind? If so, tell us and we can all help you better. Specificity counts.
Hope this helps!

You can learn a language for free if you take the time to study it independently. Try looking for foreign language websites and consider joining some kind of conversation group! For example, many non-native-English-speaking students will teach you their language if you help them with yours.

I would definitely suggest Instant Immersion. It's the same premise of Rosetta Stone, learning like a baby basically, but it costs 50 dollars. I have the German one so they definitely have that one. Also, Living Language is a good program too.

if you take a basic foreign language in college, you will be learning how to conjugate verbs. trust me. it's useless.
there is an computer program that is supposed to be great; it's called Rosetta Stone. you should check it out. supposed to be a very efficient learning tool for foreign language instruction.

Let's say you take Spanish from a community college.
Spanish I-IV would cost about $50/each. That's about as cheap as you'll get it.
At a top-notch state university, you're going to pay closer to $150/class but you also have more options. Want to learn Latin? Russian?
My source is my college experience. Each class will last a semester. I took German I-III at a state school, and Spanish I-II at a community college.

I don't know about courses that you attend, but I found a number of language courses, with sound bytes etc online, and most of them put there by students of that language themselves, so they are only interested in promoting the growth of the language.
I even found one for Sanskrit.
