when you get sunburned, you have a higher risk of skin cancer. but, is that only if you get sunburned repeatedly or if you get sunburned like every once in a while(im talking about 4-6 months)?

Skin cancer is a result of damage over years and years. When you say like 4-6 months you mean just during summer months? What you do now will show up 20 years from now. I have had skin cancer. When I was a kid I was outside all the time. I played softball and worked on a shrimp boat (big fun there). I didn’t lie out in the sun but I was in it all summer.

I think that there is a genetic link with skin cancer. Fare skinned, and freckled people are more at risk. If you are indeed at risk, and if you have a family history PLEASE stay out of tanning beds. Go for a good SPF and self tanning lotions. I’ve become at peace with my paleness (wink).

Unfortunately, your risk for skin cancer increases with every bad sunburn you get. It all really depends on your skin, as some people are more susceptible to sunlight than others. If you're fair, it could only take a few blistering sunburns while others are more resilient. If you're concerned it's probably best to wear sunscreen when you're outdoors for extended periods of time; if you feel you might be at risk, go to a dermatologist to get checked for any abnormalities. (I've only had a few bad sunburns but have had 2 pre-cancerous moles taken off of my back!)
Hope this helps!

Every time you get sunburned, dosen't matter if it is once a year, you are significantly increasing the risk of a Melanoma. Admittedly, the chances are less than say getting burned say 3 or 4 times a year but also keep in consideration that some people are more susceptable to acquiring Melanomas than others.
