They'll mix up a plaster called alginate, place it in an impression tray that should be the size of your mouth, and place it in your mouth for about 30 seconds (if it's fast set material - 1 minute if not). The material is "gooey" and feels weird at first but it's not bad. If it's an upper impression of your mouth then you may feel like gaging, but the thing to do is to focus on breathing through your nose until the material has set. A lower impression shouldn't make you gage and is easier. The taste depends on what the dental office has, mint, bubble gum, etc. or there is no taste really at all.

I've worked in dentistry and taken impressions for eight years.

There are a couple of reasons for having impressions taken of your teeth and a couple of different methods. The simplest method uses Alginate. This is a pink powder that is mixed with water to produce a soft gel that is placed into either metal or plastic trays that roughly fit over your teeth. The trays filled with gel are then sunk down onto your teeth and held in position until the material sets (about 1-2 minutes depending on how hot your mouth is!) Once the stuff is set the trays are lifted off your teeth and you rinse out. There really isn't any taste it just feels cold and gelatinous. You might want to have a handful of tissues to catch any dribbles!

The second reason to have an impression taken is if you are having a crown, bridge or veneer made at a laboratory. The material used for this is an elastomeric impression material that is mixed in two formats, a very thin (runny) form is squirted around the preparation (after the dentist has prepared the tooth), then a thicker form is placed into an impression tray and pushed over the prepared teeth. This material takes about 5 minutes to set. This time you will probably have the suction in your mouth to control the saliva levels. Again there really isn't much taste the only nasty thing is having to keep your mouth open for 5 minutes and not disturb the impression while it is setting.

The paste has no taste, and it takes about a few seconds to put it in your mouth and take it out. The only long part is waiting for the paste to dry (2 - 3 minuteS) As long as you have a mouth that fits the plastic container, don't worry about it. Tell us how it goes. Good luck and don't stress! (musch less painful than braces or getting teeth plucked out)

Its simple really they take 2 Teeth trays and fill them with a rubbery goo like stuff and place them in your mouth. You bite down on them and within a few minutes they harden and they pull them out. They will put in a suction device in your mouth to suck out all the spit and it's over in I think 15 minutes. It tastes like mints and does not hurt at all.

They then take the moulds of your teeth and make a copy of it with plaster. You will not see this part as it is done in the lab.

Really it's nothing painful or hard.

They have this pink gummy/gooey stuff and put it in a little mouth piece shaped tray; then put it in your mouth and you bite it and hold down on it. You only have to hold it for a few seconds, and it doesn't have much of a taste. Honestly its not bad, but beware; it feels like your teeth are being pulled out when they remove it.

well first, they mix this stuff into a gooey, cool substance. then they put that stuff into 2 small arch like stierfoam bowls. then, they take 1 and sick it on your top jaw and they hold it for about 30-40 seconds. and they do that to the bottom jaw too. just be careful not to gag or anything when they gooey stuff slowly rolls down the top of your mouth :/. it doesnt really take that long. most of the time they have a variety of flavors like bubblegum, grape, watermelon, etc. at the end it looks pretty cool. :]

They fill your mouth with a minty tasting foam that molds around your teeth. I vaguely remember that it wasnt the easiest to breath around the foam. the foam hardens in a few minutes and the remove it.

It does not hurt. Dont worry, I have had one many times to get fit for retainers and braces. They put a metal holder in your mouth with some pink goop inside, they make you bite down, leave it in there for one min. and then take it out. When they take it out it will make a popping noise but thats nothing bad.

They do it in like ten minutes, and put a tube in your mouth to suck up all of your saliva. Its very bothersome and tastes a little funny. But its really no big deal
