About eight weeks. That will give them time to nurse, and as you said, they won't get neglact if you wait that long. When your cat gives birth, make sure you have a towel, water for the mommy, and make sure YOU don't wash the kittens off yourself. The Mommy cat knows what to do. She will lick it (yuck). Still got questions? E-mail or IM me. Thanks!

It depends on how much your cat trusts you. I heard you are suppose to wait untill they are at least 2 weeks old. But when my cat had kittens, she let me hold them the very first day. She did not regect them or neglect them and she did not kill them either. She took care of them like normal. I think it depends on the cat. If you are not sure about your cat, then wait for at least 2 weeks. Is this your cats first litter? She will do fine. But some cats don't know to bite the cord off after they have one. If this happens, tie a clean piece of thread around the cord about an inch away from the body of the kitten, then cut the cord below the thread. The cat usually does this herself though. So you might not have to do anything. I've had to cut the cord a few times.

I don't know how old you are or how much your cat trusts you. My cats always come to me when they are ready to have kittens.
I was lying on the couch this weekend and kinda fell asleep. The next thing I know there was a big wet spot and a kitten on me.
I stayed up all night with my Sophie while she had her kittens all on me. It's kinda gross, but clothes wash out.
I have always been there when the kittens are born and held them immediately. This last one she had, she chewed the umbilical cord too close. I thought it was going to bleed to death. I immediately picked it up and wrapped it in a wash cloth and held it until it stopped bleeding.
He ended up being fine. If I hadn't been there I'm afraid it might have bled to death. My cats love and trust me 100%. I've almost always been there at birth and handled them immediately with no consequences.
The litter before this, the mom came and had them in bed with me. She didn't know what was going on. I had to cut their umbilical cord and pull the placenta out of her.
I definitely don't suggest handling them unless you have a very deep connection with your cat. I'm an animal lover and all animals sense that. That is not true of all people.
They are 2 days old today and I have been taking turns holding them all evening. The mom doesn't care. I tell her to go outside and I'll watch them. Mom trusts me and does go out for awhile.
Unless you know your cat trusts you, wait awhile to handle them. But, don't think that you can't handle them and the cat will ignore them if you do. In 10 years of my cats having kittens, I've always handled them immediately and they never neglected them.

You should wait at least a week, unless absolutely neccessary. If you start to intrude too much the mother will try and hide them from you and depending on the cat, may hiss or growl if you try to get too close, too early. Just give the momma cat time with her kits.

When my cat had kittens, she trusted my family and loved when we held her babies, from day 1. Just try petting her babies while she is near, and see how she reacts. If she trusts you, you will know, and she will want you to share in the joy!

Between one or two weeks. At least that's the case for puppys. I don't know why you can't pick them up for very long, but I always heard that you shouldn't. Good Luck.

Right after you spay the mother. Too many kittens and not enough loving families. Be a responsible owner, please spay and neuter!
