I've found BBH hostels to be pretty good in New Zealand. They seem to be heaps better than YHA, which I've found to be quite unreliable. Most hostels have fully equipped kitchens, so just buy supermarket food and cook it like you would at home!

Try these sites for acommodation in Australia and NZ - I've given you some sample links. Sort the results by price, location and star rating. A tip, look out for specials under last minute and dig deep to see what's been included, like meals.

Some of the 2 / 3 star hotels work out at better value than the hostels, but they're both here. Cheap may not mean cheap when you consider location ( save on transport) , time - valuable on vacation, free amenities which you would spend money on e.g. internet access, gym , breakfasts, transfers to airport etc - so look through the offerings carefully. Also - remember hotels/serviced apartments allow 2-3 persons to a room. Hostels are usually per person.

There are plenty of food bars in major shopping areas and the city which provide a healthy range of international meals like Chinese , Thai , Lebanese , salads etc etc for around A$7

Hope that helps

Hi

try hostelworld or hostels.com

I wouldnt bother with YHA as their hostels tend to be pretty boring, and partying isnt really allowed.

For meals, most hostels will have a kitchen where you can make your own meals. The best thing I found whilst backpacking was to take with me a pocket knife which can be used for an assortment of things like cutting cheese or meat, to opening a bottle of wine or beer.

Some girls I met while travelling also had with them a couple of plastic bowls and when we were staying somewhere for a couple of days, would buy a box of cereal and milk so they could have a cheap breakfast.

Others I met would buy bread rolls and bananas and have them for lunch.

Find local markets. You will be able to buy fruit cheap that way, also I know in Melbourne there are alot of Vietnamese restaurants that you will be able to buy cheaper meals like laksa, and rice paper rolls.

Supermarkets are plentiful and you can do it pretty cheap.

I hope this helps. email me if you would like some other advice.

www.hostelworld.com

I used them when I went traveling thur Europe. They also have it for Australia and New Zealand.
I recommand it highly. Gives you fellow travelers reviews and even pictures to give you an idea as to what the place looks like, and it gives you directions and all the things offered at that particular hostel.

Enjoy OZ/NZ. Beautiful countries!! Loved em both!
Later, Mate!

For New Zealand, the best options are YHA or BBH - almost all hostels are part of one or both - see http://www.yha.co.nz and http://www.bbh.co.nz
