I'm considering a job on Staten Island at a school, but I don't want to live there. Where's a good place in NYC to live, but still be able to get to Staten Island by public transportation in under an hour? Thanks.

Live anywhere but Staten Island unless you want to die from boredom.
Public Trans is pretty bad on SI but if you lived downtown in the city you can takethe Ferry then the train/bus to where ever you have to go.
SI sucks but it might be your only option because either you pay the high rent rates of Manhattan or you live in brooklyn which will mean you will have to buy a car and pay $11 every day in tolls to cross the verazano bridge.......

There's always the possibility of car pooling
