The series is by mondrian, a Swiss artist who came to New York around the time of the troubles in Europe before WW 2.
He did develop his abstract style by simplifying his tree painting right down to its basics but the series you are talking about was his reaction to the incredible hustle/bustle of the modern American city that was New York in the forties. He even named one painting 'Broadway Boogie-Woogie'.
