Depression is a feeling of listlessness and hopelessness.
Mania is a feeling of "super" energy and invincibility.
Biological causes could be an overactive limbic system that is constantly producing norepenephrine and then correcting itself and causing a "feast or famine" situation. This is supported by research.
There are several behavioral theories on depression and manic episodes. One is "learned helplessness". Another is "facilitation", where a depressed person only associates with people that make them feel more depressed. Reserach seems to support both theories, but not in all cases.
Freud believed that depression and mania were caused by a misplaced rage in the anal stage of development (tiolet training) that made a person alternate love and hate themselves. However, there is no evidence for this point of view.

It's normal to feel sad in certain situations. Clinical depression is when somebody feels exceedingly sad regardless of the situation. It might be related to abnormal levels of neurotransmitters serotonin and/or epinephrine (adrenaline), or because the body reabsorbs the neurotransmitter too quickly. It isn't 100% clear because depressed people don't always have an obviously low level of these neurotransmitters, but medications that keep the levels up do tend to help with depressive symptoms.
Mania is the opposite of depression, I have been told that it is a reaction caused by the brain to naturally deal with depression, and for some reason, it gets out of control and overcompensates. I have heard that mania may be caused by an abnormality in another neurotransmitter called gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA). This is supposed to keep nerves from "over-firing" but an abnormal GABA level may fail to prevent this. Abnormal GABA levels are also believed to cause seizures--some anti-seizure medications also work on manic symptoms (such as tegretol and klonopin).

your best bet is to go to the Depression Bipolar Support Alliance web site. just type in dbsa and hit web search. as a person who is bipolar--manic/depressive myself--i can tell you it's an extremely difficult illness to have. the depression part is total lack of willingness to even live and the mania can be overwhelming because your thoughts go everywhere and the first thing to go is your judgment. you think you can do anything and even try to!
