My daughter is extremely sad everyday. I try talking to her, but she just pushes me away. I tried phoning the school to see if anyone was bullying her, but they said that nobody has. My daughter never wants to go out, she's failing school, and she's just not happy with anything. She has never been like this; she used to be so happy and ace school. My daughter is twelve. Is it just puberty, or do you think she's depressed? (Rude answers will be ignored.)

Prolonged sleeping patterns, and not finding joy in formerly pleasurable activities are included among the symptoms. In my opinion as a psychologist, yes she probably has a mild form of depressive tendencies, but hopefully does not require treatment. Please always save medication as a last resort.

If i can offer you one piece of advice that you might listen to the this would be it... If she has depression, which it sounds like to me, then try to work it out without medication. I have been on medication since i was 10 for depression and it is the worst thing that has ever happened to me. I am worse now that what i was before and it has been proven to be the tablets. I am not saying tablets are bad, yes, i'm sure in many cases they are great but getting the right one is a must, along with the hope you don't get caught out with a wrong one inbetween. If you can't talk to her, ask her if she would mind seeing a doctor, or counciller. I wish you and your family all the love and luck in the world.

I can't really say for sure about your daughter, but if she's acting so terribly sad and gloomy, you might want to take her to counselling. Twelve is a tough age to go through (think back to when you were twelve) because you are child that is becoming an adult and different things are happening to your body. I would try contacting the school again to ask about how she is acting in class. She could be depressed, but I can't say for sure. Good luck!

She sounds like she might be depressed. Has she been like this for nearly every day for over a month? If not, maybe it will pass on it's own. If it has lasted longer than a month, have her see a medical doctor. A psychiatrist would be best, but a regular general practitioner should be able to recognize depression, and possibly make a referral to a psychiatrist.
