I am writing a document and when I am finished I try to go back and edit a few parts here and there. My problem is that when I do this as I am typing in more words it deletes the words that I already had there. In other words when I try to add more words instead of just adding them it deletes the stuff that was already there to put it in. If you can show me how to fix this I will be very thankful.

sounds like the insert key has been pressed. Try hitting "insert" on your keyboard (above delete) and see if that helps.
