Of the Catholic people I know, they don't seem to mind using the Lord's name in vain. A catholic woman I work with says 'Jesus Christ' about 20x a day whenever her computer freaks out, or when the copier messes up....whatever. Is there something about Catholicism that says it's alright to do this? Just curious.

Catholics also believe in the second commandment of not taking the Lord's name in vain. This commandment is about how we talk, the commitments we make with our words and how we reveal ourselves though our speech. This is not a condoned behavior and, in fact, is against the teachings of the Bible. When a person uses the Lord's name inappropriately, you might take this opportunity to ask them why they use the Lord's name and if you ask it honestly and let them know that this behavior makes you think it's a Catholic thing....they might just be shocked into looking at their own actions. But don't be surprised if they don't like having it brought to their attention...none of us like having our shortcoming pointed out. Some people do things without thinking about the consequences or how others perceive them.

Catholicism has been under attack in recent times, as are many other religious groups.

One of the old Catholic traditions forbits using the Lord's name in vain.

However, that is just a minor infraction...I mean, mentioning the name of Jesus Christ is almost a reflex action many use without thinking.

The many rules that have been broken are more important and should be addrsssed by catholics.

I personally don't eat meat on Fridays, but that rule was abolished many years ago.

Eventually abortions and homosexuality will be acceptable, and it will become a bland religion just like many others are already.

No there isn't. Catholics follow the same 10 Commandments as other Christians. But Catholics, just like other Christians, sometimes break them. I don't think "a Catholic woman you work with" is an adequate random sampling of over a billion people!

could be an anger issue, i'm catholic, i'm pissed, i was dropping a "jfc" all the time; that's the one thing i'm trying not to say, but if i'm angry and it's some deep rooted mental or spiritual ****; it feels good to say it and the guilt that follows is even more real. catholicism pretty much teaches that human beings are going to f' up big time and god; in order to love people as he says he does, needs a counterpart to act as a thrid party; playing offense and defense at the same time, this is where jesus comes in. it's like jesus is saying to god " look, i know where you come from, but what you gave these people, what would you do if you were down there?" my grandmother used to say it all the time, of course i don't think she expected an answer the last time she said it.

why is it that people can justify sin saying that we are imperfect? yes we are humans, but this is just simple Christianity 101 - seriously people.
"out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh"
- this lady professes to be a catholic or a Christian, but i think that's all it is. anybody who sincerely loves the Lord will not be able to take His Holy Name in vain.

it cuts me to the quick every time i hear it - i will leave a movie, conversation, tv program before i sit and listen to someone take the Name of the Lord in vain. There is power in that Name - why do people use it so lightly?

Catholics are not supposed to break the Commandment, "Thou shalt not use the name of the Lord thy God in vain."

This includes
+ Using God's Name in vain
+ Damning people and things to hell
+ Reviling heaven
+ Blaspheming.

"Let not your mouth form the habit of swearing, or becoming too familiar with the Holy Name. ... one who swears continually by the Holy Name will not remain free from sin." (Sirach 23:9).

Most Catholics I know do not use profanity as much as those you know. Hopefully you have just found a few bad examples.

With love in Christ.

Depends on what you mean in vain. The woman in question blurts out "Jesus Christ" whenever something malfunctions. Okay. But there's no "direct assault" to J.C. and to His being per say, other than yelling. Example: I want to make my point to you and you don't understand. Exasperated, I say "Jesus Christ" don't you understand? No. I didn't use His name in vain, just yelling Him to have you listen to me. Now if you use the "F" word in between His name, then you've collected a venial black mark.

Catholics are supposed to follow the Ten Commandments, including the one that says we shall honor the Lord our God. Using God's name in vain isn't honoring God. (or Jesus, for that matter)

Not just Catholics (or even Christians) I believe that applies to about 75% of the English speaking population. Regardless of religion (or lack there of). But most of you will not admit it! Why pick on Catholics?
