I have talked to my hair dresser about this. Most hair dyes only make hair darker, never lighter. I have noticed that certain brands like L'Oreal have started making hair dyes that are "specially formulated" to make dark hair lighter. If you have pitch black hair and want a drastic color change your only real option is having it bleached then colored. I suggest you go see a professional hair dresser for this, do NOT attempt it on your own. Bleach and hair dye can ruin the quality of your hair and cause damage to your scalp.

depends on if the hair is colored black or natural. if its colored, the only product to lift it is bleach...color cannot lift color. If its natrual, of course, but stick with something no lighter than 3 shades and with an ash undertone to cancel out gold/red tones.
