el chico/niño se está aburriendo...the sentence in english is passive, which means something or someone is causing the boy to get bored..."el chico/niño está aburrido" would be "the boy is bored"

the boy is being bored = al niño/chico lo están aburriendo

The thing here is that even in English is wrong or inappropriately put, how do you expect to do it well in Spanish then???
The correct form is "The boy is bored"
And then in Spanish "El niño está aburrido"
Now it's right...
