Watch the film "Enemy at the Gates". That's my suggestion. The German army in all their might, got swallowed up by the vast Russian subcontinent, just as Napoleon did 150 years before.
Most experts don't dispute that the Germans were the technically superior force, but the Russians were better adapted to the savage winter and they were on their own turf, fighting building to building. All they had to do was prolong the battle and the Germans would be frozen/starved out.
In a way, it is not that dissimilar to the U.S. in Vietnam, trying to subdue an elusive enemy in their own country in a guerrilla war.

Urban warfare in a burned out city filled with rubble, where military gains were measured in city blocks and bombed out factories. The winter added to their torment. This was life after the 6th Army was surrounded and barely kept alive with air drops. Like someone mentioned above, the Enemy At the Gates was a good perspective of warfare in Stalingrad.

During WWII? not having been there at the time and only reading thefactual accounts at the time, I can only imagine it to be a frozen hell on earth. There were litterally Millions lost at the battle of Stalingrad, not to menation civilians as well. Hundreds or thousands froze and starved to death. I can't imagine being hungry all the time like that, frozen all the time with no recourse, and people trying to kill you at the same time. Not a pretty site!

Not good. These were brave guys irrespective of the historical mudslinging. Irrespective of the uniform, it reminds me of something attributed to a Russian:
" Show me a Siberian who's crazy about snow ... and I'll show you a crazy Siberian! "
