When I was Christian, I heard an explaination for this:
The world that God first created, along with Adam and Eve and all the animals, was a much different world then what we have now. That if they had not sinned, then the world God had created would have been perfect - which meant it would have had the perfect population. The perfect balance of animals etc. Everything would have been in complete and perfect balance.
But because they sinned, everything is out of balance - which is why we have the risk of severe over population, starvation famine etc. Because the perfect balance has ended.
Though, as a side note, I would think that death would have still existed. Adam, Eve and the animals ate plants. What happened to these plants? Didn't at least part of them die in order to be eaten? Doesn't that mean there was a least some part of death already in the garden?

If Adam and Eve lived only a few thousand years ago, as some contend, then we could not possibly have the genetic variation we see in the human species today. The degree of genetic variation suggests that the common ancestor of all modern humans lived some 120,000 years ago.

G_D created Adam and Eve. The Serpant (Lucifer) tempted Eve and she bit the fruit, in turn she sinned.
From then on the earth went on growing, like you see today. Then times got so wicked, and so full of sin, G_D looked for someone who was pure in his race. He found Noah.
So then we go on with the Noah story....Noah, his family are saved and everyone else is destroyed, all those that Adam and Eve created.
Now flood is over and Noahs family (son's, their wives, etc....so many say incest but its not) repopulates the earth. Man you see today are from Noah, who is from Adam and Eve.
edit:
since I saw an answer about the rib, always someone. ask a doctor or look it up yourself. you can take the last rib out of man, and it will regrow itself. the only item in the body that does so. so explain that, and if you say they knew it cause of medical....umm...this was thousands of yrs ago, they didn't know medicine.

If Adam and Eve are true, then there would be no genetic diversity. We would all be near identical. Adam was one possible person, with Eve being made from his genetic material (rib), they would be essentially the same. And their off-spring would then likewise share the exact same genetics since there would never be any variation to be introduced.
But, assuming it was all true... since they were not perceptive enough on their own to realize they were naked, I am thinking they probably weren't going to figure out just what to do with each other while naked, meaning there wasn't too much danger of any children.

The story is fiction, but the problem you propose is not the reason why: the tale is that Adam and Eve did not eat of the tree of life, so would not live forever. But we know from genetic evidence that, although there were unique male and female progenitors of the species, they never saw each other: they lived 250,000 years apart.

There were two trees that Adam and Eve were forbidden to eat from: the tree of life, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. They ate the fruit of the second tree, and so were expelled from the garden of Eden to be sure they would not also eat from the first.
I think you do have to assume that Heaven and Hell (at least the latter) are really, really big.

The story of Adam and Eve is an alagorical story about humankind turning from a hunter gatherer to a "civilized" creature that farms.

I believe that the story of Adam and Eve is nothing but primitive man's attempt to explain "how we got here." It's a classic creation story.

Logically speaking, you would be absolutely correct. Unfortunately, you are not factoring in the "sin" factor. We don't know what plans we would have been able to fulfill if there were no sin. We may have been able to travel to other planets. Think about it, all of the speculation of life on other planets is not so inconceivable.
Thanks for the question.
