Cheapest are youth hostels, clean and quiet, but not centrally located. Beds are about $100HK. Their location could be an advantage or an inconvenient depending on what you like. Also a nice deal on Lantau Island is the Silvermine Beach Hotel for about $60US. In Kowloon, choices are limited: the Metropark is usually a good deal for a business hotel, there's another in Causeway Bay for under $100. Tatami Hampton is a budget hotel with nano-rooms, for about $400 HK, but it is in a great location half a block from Nathan road, easily accessible from the airport via shuttle # 26 for $30HK. I quite like staying there when I am alone. Guesthouses are fine if you don't mind mingling with people. I personally like that option.

Book on line at least to secure a room for the first couple of nights. Try the link from the Lonely Planet website or Expedia. If you like the hotel, stay longer, but if you want to go elsewhere, you can find many other choices once you are there depending on your budget.

Cheap, close to KCR/MTR stations in Kowloon, and cheap. Though it isnt high quality, it looks cheaper to me. And I'm pretty sure that it is always cheaper online than on site booking, pluc you can be generally assured of a room. On the other hand, u can always book thru a travel agent, i stayed at the Harbour plaza metropolis for like under $100 US/night during august.
