Face it- I'm sure everyone has heard one or two Mormon/Utah jokes, unless you live out of the U.S., and with the 2008 Presidential elections, Mitt Romney, a "Mormon" is running as a Republican canidate. This might stir up controversey, and so I was wondering what your thoughts were on how Latterday Saints are represented.

LDS members are enjoying some of the most positive publicity in their history. Even though Mitt Romney may not win the nomination, it will not affect the fact that most Americans have a positive feeling about Mormons in general. In other words, they have successfully integrated themselves into modern culture. Keep up the good work, and soon, you will have a Mormon president. Maybe not in 2008, but soon.

I think that there has been more media attention on us (mormons- LDS, whatever you want to say) in the last few years. The leader of our church- Pres. Hinkley- has really shed some light on some things we believe. There are still misconceptions out there that will probably always be there, but the media has shown us a pretty good light.

As far as the Mitt Romney thing goes, I wouldn't vote for him just because he is LDS. I would vote for him though, but it's because I know what kind of person he really is. His values are centered on families, on biblical teachings and on Christ. I would vote for any candidate that has the same core values as I do, regardless of what religion they are. And compared to a few of the candidates, he's really my best pick.

I'm sure his running will bring up a lot of bad things people have heard about the church, and it will bias a lot of people against him. But I'm hoping that some questions will be answered by him that will make more people understand us.

Yes, I think that they are, sometimes, and South Park is a BIG case in point.

Too many people seem to think that the best people to go to to learn what Mormons believe are those that hate us; therefore, there are a lot of misrepresentations and just downright lies told about what we believe.

Whenever you hear some crazy, stupid, weird story of "This is what MORMONS believe" (i.e. South Park), ask yourself; "Would any sane rational, intelligent human being believe this stuff? Why would they want to?" and if you answer no to the first, and can't find anything for the second, then you can safely assume that this is NOT what Mormons believe.

My review of the South Park episode?

Dum dum dum dum dum!

What is this law suit that the Reagan administration was bringing against the church? Everyone tells me about law suits because we didn't give the priesthood to blacks of AFrican descent, but that was rescinded in 1978, long before the Reagan Administration.

I think the deck has been stacked from the word, "Go"....
We believe differently from "traditional Christainity" by not accepting the idea of the Trinity.

We believe that we are capable of being like the Father some day and some see that as blasphemous. Hmmmm thought- I just realized that's why the Jews wanted to kill Jesus- He said he was the Son of God- putting Himself on an equal (or almost equal) standing with God, and look where it got Him...

Anyway, we're different, and anytime you have a person (or group) that is different from the norm, the different one(s) get crapped on.

President Hinkley, current leader of the LDS Church has done a lot to develop a positive public perception about us, and I hope that whatever Mitt Romney does doesn't ruin what has been accomplished...

Actually, yes. They publish their own commercials, don't forget. And the South Park episodes the first responder referrs to, I thought were in a kind light, or maybe that's just compared to the Mormons I've actually known (no I have not had good experiences with them). I don't see very much negative about them, unless someone is thinking of those Fundie polygamists at the border, who are fringe freaks. I think most people understand that.

Are they represented? I really don't know any mormon jokes.
I really don't know much about them accept from what I've learned through MORMON friends or commercials. I do know some basic things talked about in one of our Church SS classes on different religions.
No I don't think they are represented in anyway. If we have someone running for president I am sure the attacks will come.

For the most part I think we (the Mormons) are getting represented as fairly as most other religions. In fact, I think that we are getting more and more good publicity than bad publicity. Granted there are still things published that are incorrect. But, overall I think that publicity about us in general has improved greatly in the last 10-20 years.

I don't have a bad perception of Mormons as a result of the mdeia. There are kooks like Warren Jeffs (sp?) but even most Mormons shun him. My perception is that Mormons are generally nice folks with a positive attitude. Everytime the missionaries come to my house I take time to chat with'em and they always seem like good guys.

It depends on the source of media. Shows like southpark and big love (which they do not state, but falsely imply) are unreliable and do not have the correct knowledge. If is is information coming from an LDS endorsed source of media, than it is 100% correct in factual information.

On what basis can you claim ANYONE is "represented fairly" in the media?

The media HAS an agenda, particularly where national politics are concerned. The coverage that they give ANYTHING should be considered as attempting to bring about their desired end.
