I have two cats, both females: the first I adopted as an adult when my previous cat died, the second is an older cat (13) I've had for a year that I got from a friend who was going to take her to the shelter because of his wife's illness.

The second cat was never fixed, so she still goes into heat. Every time she goes into heat, I find cat pee in various places - my curtains, my clothes, shoes, mail, etc. It stops as soon as she's done.

Is there any psychological way of figuring out who's doing it? Do cats in heat pee more, or more likely to mark territory than they would otherwise?

Could my other cat be rebelling against territory invasion from the cat in heat (who normally stays in my office).

Just trying to find out more about urination habits of cats in heat - it's been decades since I've had a cat that wasn't fixed.

Thanks in advance for any advice!!

Is there a tiny bit of blood in this urine? When female cats are in heat, they sometimes leave a little liquid that is pinkish. I think it would be a good idea to have her spayed. Cats are very uncomfortable when they are in heat and do not get bred. Plus, this will probably help her and the resident cat get along better. Good luck.

In answer to your question, yes, being entire can cause her to go outside the box.

One of the two most likely problems, given her age are, Pyometra, an infection that female cats get in the uterus when they aren't speyed which is often symptomless and fatal, unless the vet desexes it before the toxins enter the blood, usuallly by the time you see a vaginal discharge it is too late. The fact she's doing it whilst in heat could mean this is the problem.

The other is a urinary tract infection, with or without crystals. Whenever a cat's behaviour changes, no matter how minor it seems, a vet check is always necessary as often the behaviour changes are the first sign a cat is ill. This is a remnant of their wild ancestry, they hide illness because to display it shows weakness and makes them vulnerable to attack by other cats and other animals. Cats are often at death's door before you know there's anything wrong at all.

She's doing that because when female cats go into heat, they urinate in different spots so that the male cats can find her when they smell her scent, then when they find her, they mate with her. I would suggest to you to take your kitty to the vet and get her fixed as soon as you can, that'll solve the spraying problem.
