Understand this verse?
Matthew 6:24
"No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.

I know many should know this verse, or have heard it--but do you really understand it? It is a great verse.

It speaks plainly and is easily understood. Either you wish to serve the Lord or you wish to pursue financial and worldly riches. "Love the Lord with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength and all your mind."

it is a powerful verse - esp because if you keep reading, you see the story of the rich young ruler, a man who was given an invitation to be a disciple of the Lord, but missed his moment b/c he loved money more than God.

- serving God will cost you everything. and if you aren't willing to pay the cost, then you will miss your moment.

it is a great verse.

This is what I think it means; you can not be boastful, etc. etc. and serve God at the same time. In other words it takes us back to the first commandment: Thou shalt have no other gods before Me. Throughout the bible inbetween the lines you feel and see those things.

You either love and are devoted to your money and the things that it can buy, such as material things, or you love and are devoted to God.

God wants us to understand that all things come from Him. Even our money. Our possessions can become our god.

When we love God and He is our master, we give to others.

basically seems to say that one can either work for god or work for money

of course it is legitimate to work for enough money to get by, but to devote oneself to moving up in the world would, according to this passage, prevent one from working from god

Yeah, and just look at all those Christians disbursing themselves of their wealth and worldly goods... I guess the Christian population of the world isn't 1.5 billion after all.
