Awww...sorry to hear that. :-( Maybe you can take some old pictures of the dog and put them to a Powerpoint slide show for her with some music or something. Also, have her watch the following poem in video form below:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Here is a little poem I found, while researching the subject of Euthanasia. I hope it makes your mom feel a little better!!! "May I go now? Don't you think the time is right? May I say goodbye, to pain-filled days, and endless , lonely nights? I've lived my life, and done my best, an example tried to be. So can I step beyond and set my spirit free? I didn't want to go at first. I fought with all my might. But something seems to draw me now, to a warm and loving light. I want to go, I really do, it's difficult to stay. But I will try as best I can, to live just one more day. To give you time, to care for me, and share you love and fears. I know your sad and are afraid, because I see your tears. I will not be far, I promise that, and hope you'll always know, that my spirit will be close to you, wherever you may go. Thank You so much, for loving me, you know I loved you too. That's why, it's hard to say goodbye, and end this life with you.So hold me now, just one more time, and let me hear you say, because you care so much for me, you'll let me go today". There is also a website called, "The Rainbow Bridge". This is a site for people who have lost their loving pets, and I think it would help your mom too. Rainbow Bridge.com I am so sorry to hear about your dog. It's so hard, when you lose, such a loving member of the family. I hope this helps a little!!!!!!

So sorry to hear that. I'm a veterinary nurse so I often get to chat to people who have just had their pets put to sleep. I find the people who cope best are those who have been reassured they've done the right thing. If your dog is very old and/or very sick, then this is the right thing - it's the last kindness you can show your beloved pet, and one that humans don't have the advantage of.

Also talk about how you're going to say goodbye to your doggy - are you burying him/her at home or having a cremation? Maybe having the ashes back? Getting this sort of thing sorted is a good way to get closure.

You have to take time to be sad together, but know that it does get better with time and one day you and your mom will just be smiling at all the good memories.

Take care, Chalice

I'm afraid there's not too much you can do make her feel better except be there for her. Just let her talk if she wants to talk, and be quiet if she wants to be quiet. It's going to take some time, but then talking about your dog, remembering all the funny things he did and the good times you had, is going to make your mom and you happy again.

I have no idea that anything really works at a time like this but I am terribly sorry for you and you should just let her know that you understand she is sad, you are there if she needs ahug and then bring her some really good chocolate and a bowl of ice cream.

Take care.

I'm sorry your mom has to let go as such a truasure as a pet.Tell her its the best way to put him/her out of his/her pain, and that he/she will be in a better place.Maybe take her to a nice restraunt tommarow. It might be nice (if you wanna) to make a photo album or have a funeral service. Again, very sorry for your (and her) loss.

My grandma's cat (who was 21!) recently was put down. For a comforting gift, i made a collage of many pictures of her cat and put it in a frame and put her name across the top. She absolutely loved it and hung it up on her wall. Just an idea.....also, dont rush into getting another pet.

When my husband's dog died suddenly and unexpectedly, we held a candle ceremony, just the two of us. We spent some time thinking about the dog and remembering the things we liked about him.

I'm so sorry about your sad news. It's hard to know what to do in a situation like that. Just be there for her, do nice stuff for her, give her hugs, and listen to her.
